Job Description:
Monte Sano Research Corporation (MSRC) is a Huntsville-based
Small Business specializing in providing full-spectrum defense
system engineering, research, design, development, integration,
test, evaluation, and planning services to the U.S. Government. Our
primary focus at MSRC is to provide extraordinary talent to propel
the Warfighter, and we seek to hire people who are Elevated (always
do the right thing), Exceptional (the very best at what they do),
and Enduring (self-disciplined; self-motivated). MSRC is seeking an
experienced Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in optical
system and component design to join a diverse team developing
innovative solutions to complex defense-related challenges. The
ideal candidate will have extensive experience in designing,
integrating, and overseeing the manufacturing of complex facilities
and precision components, particularly in the optical design arena.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Mechanical Engineer will provide
technical leadership and sound engineering judgment in a
fast-paced, rapid-prototyping environment. This role requires
ownership of complex, high-precision mechanical designs from
concept through manufacturing and integration. Responsibilities
include: Design and develop high-tolerance, precision mechanical
assemblies and components, particularly for optical systems, where
alignment, stability, and repeatability are critical. Create
adjustable mechanical designs that allow for fine alignment,
calibration, and environmental compensation while maintaining
structural integrity and performance. Create detailed 3D models and
production drawings using SolidWorks, ensuring full compliance with
GD&T standards and established Army drawing practices. Lead the
mechanical design and integration of specialized test facilities
and infrastructure supporting optical, RF, and IR systems,
including structural layouts, mounting systems, environmental
controls, and support equipment. Perform and oversee Finite Element
Analysis (FEA), modal analysis, and related analytical methods to
evaluate structural performance, vibration response, and thermal
effects on precision assemblies. Conduct design trade studies and
engineering analyses to optimize performance, manufacturability,
cost, and tolerance stack-up. Oversee fabrication and integration
of hardware, working closely with machinists and manufacturing
vendors to ensure precision requirements are achieved. Communicate
and collaborate with vendors to support system requirements; review
technical proposals and bids to ensure compliance with performance,
tolerance, and manufacturing requirements. Collaborate across
multidisciplinary teams to resolve open-ended engineering
challenges and support system integration and test activities.
Prepare clear, technically rigorous documentation including design
reports, specifications, test plans, and analysis summaries.
Support system-level testing and validation efforts; experience
supporting RF and IR testing environments is a strong plus.
Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science in accredited
Engineering or scientific discipline required. Job Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience.
Extensive experience in optical systems or precision mechanical
design preferred. Proficiency in SolidWorks 2020 or newer and
Product Data Management (PDM) systems. Strong working knowledge of
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Experience
performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA), modal analysis, and
related analytical methods. Experience with structural and
vibration analysis software packages. Demonstrated ability to solve
complex, open-ended engineering problems in a team environment.
Strong technical writing skills and ability to interpret
engineering drawings, specifications, and system requirements.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including
experience interfacing with vendors and external partners. Ability
to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills Additional Requirements:
Active Secret DoD Clearance or eligibility to obtain clearance.
Candidate must currently possess and be able to maintain an active
security clearance. Position contingent upon funding. MSRC’s Equal
Employment Opportunity (EEO) practices are grounded in federal
laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section
503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Vietnam Era Veterans’
Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 (VEVRAA), and the Americans
with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), among others. These
laws prohibit discrimination in employment based on race, color,
national origin, age, religion, sex, disability, marital status,
veteran status, genetic information, and other protected

any such trait. These protections apply across all aspects of
employment, including hiring, promotion, training, and
termination.
